Galway

Study in Galway

Galway, a medieval harbour city on Ireland’s west coast, is the fourth largest city in the Republic of Ireland with a population of approximately 70,000 people. This vibrant and picturesque city is among the country’s top tourist destinations; second only to Dublin. Galway City is known for its warm and welcoming locals and lively pubs, while its winding cobblestone streets are packed with students, artists, writers and craftspeople. It is referred to as the cultural heart of Ireland and is famous for its art scene, which culminates in the Galway International Arts Festival held every year in mid-July.

The compact size of the city means that everything is always within easy walking distance, while residential areas are just a short bike ride away from the city centre.

The Galway region is spectacularly beautiful, featuring wild and remote countryside bordered by the rugged Atlantic coastline. This landscape ensures that there is a wide variety of outdoor activities available within a short distance of the city centre, from golf to horse riding, and from kayaking to hill walking.

  • Galway was nominated as the European Capital of Culture for 2020.
  • One quarter of Galway’s population is made up of students.
  • The city was named in the Financial Times FDI magazine 2014/2015 as European city and region of the future, ranked number 1 European micro city.
  •  In 2020, Galway was voted as Europe’s friendliest city by international travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller.
  • The Aran Islands, probably Ireland’s most famous islands, are located just off the coast of Galway. They are also Gaeltacht areas (where Gaelic is spoken by the locals).
  • The place with the longest name in Ireland is located in Galway – Muckanaghederdauhaulia.
